New year, new Lakeland? With so many developments planned for this year, we have plenty of diverse dining destinations, fresh entertainment, and renovated retail to look forward to. Here are a few we’re most anticipating.

Arts + entertainment

We don’t have to wait long for this first development. The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art will reveal a major expansion in January, which Executive Director Dr. Alex Rich called “a once-in-a-generation moment.”

Be one of the first to see the additional galleries, art labs, and new renovations when it opens on Saturday, Jan. 18.

This building will soon house Bright Ice and The Wine Garden at the corner of South Florida Avenue + Belmar Street.

Dining

Date nights will get even easier to plan when a trio of businesses open in Dixieland. By the Chef Pizza is already offering focaccia slices as part of its soft opening in its new brick-and-mortar in the former Biscuits and Benedicts location.

You’ll also be able to walk next door to Bright Ice Scoop Shop soon to grab ice cream for dessert — according to Google Maps, it will open on Feb. 1 in the former Petals Flower Shoppe. Thirsty for more? The Wine Garden will also open early this year in the same space with artisan wines + cheeses, perfect for a nightcap.

Retail

Lake Miriam Square Publix devotees, your time has almost come. The supermarket was demolished in summer of 2024 and is currently being rebuilt with a larger footprint, including a mezzanine with seating and a new liquor store + pharmacy.

The remodeled store is set to open this summer, but you can shop the former Publix GreenWise Market store across the street until then.

Which development are you watching this year? Let us know if it’s one of these or if there’s another on your radar, and check out more of what’s new and coming soon in Swan City.
