If you’ve been wondering when a new restaurant will open in the former WACO Kitchen space at Lakeland International Airport, we have an answer for you.

In their Dec. 16 meeting, the Lakeland City Commission approved a five-year lease agreement for the space with Sora, a restaurant concept created by one current and one former member of Catapult, including Downtown Farmers Curb Market staple Omusubee.

In the lease document, Sora describes itself as a “food destination concept similar in nature to a food hall.” Multiple vendors will comprise the concept, the majority of which will serve Asian-influenced dishes such as onigiri, curry, and taiyaki. Others would serve up classic American fare like burgers, salads, and sandwiches — a bar is also in the plans.

With approval in hand, Sora’s lease will begin on Jan. 1. While an opening date has not been announced, Airport Director Kris Hallstrand shared during the meeting that once the restaurant is ready, a grand opening celebration will be held. Hallstrand also shared that since the restaurant is located before security, there will be free, four-hour parking dedicated for patrons.
