Influential Lakelander’s home hits the market

Take a look inside the Ludd M. Spivey House, formerly home to Florida Southern College’s president who made a historic impact on the campus.

The home was built in 1925, when Spivey became president of FSC.

It’s not every day you get to see inside the home of a local history maker, but the Ludd M. Spivey House near Lake Hollingsworth is on the real estate market in Lakeland.

Does that name sound familiar? Ludd M. Spivey was president of Florida Southern College from 1925 to 1957. He was the one who sent the campus-changing telegram to architect Frank Lloyd Wright, asking him to transform the school’s design.

The Spanish Colonial-style home is located near FSC’s campus at 801 Hollingsworth Rd., and it’s said that Wright would visit Spivey’s place on visits to Lakeland. We think he’d appreciate its 100-year-old features, like a sunken living room, blended with modern additions, such as the remodeled kitchen + guest apartment.

This listing by Paige Wagner Homes is now pending, so take a peek before it’s a done deal. You can also learn more about the property’s history in “The People Who Live There,” sold at local bookstores.
