Publix is on a mission to feed communities. And that mission goes beyond the food they sell in their stores each day.

ICYMI, September is Hunger Action Month, during which hunger-relief organization Feeding America strives to raise awareness about hunger in the U.S. and how individuals + corporate donors can help.

Based right here in Lakeland, Publix Charities has been recognized as a Visionary Partner of Feeding America for the work they’re doing to alleviate hunger in the Southeastern U.S.

Here’s a by-the-numbers look at hunger across the U.S., plus how Publix is helping make a difference in the seven states where they operate:

  • 42.1 million: How many households in the U.S. are food-insecure, meaning they have limited or uncertain access to food.
  • 6.5 million: How many children live in these food-insecure households. (Hungry children have a harder time focusing in school and are less likely to graduate from high school and ultimately find a well-paying job.)
  • 337 million+: How many pounds of food Publix has donated to the Feeding America network since 2011. That works out to 281 million meals.
  • $17 million+: How much Publix Super Markets Charities donated to hunger-related programs between 2014 to 2018.
  • $5 million: How much Publix Super Markets Charities donated to Feeding America food banks + other nonprofits across the U.S. during last year’s campaign.
  • $86 million+: How much has been donated in food via the Food for Sharing program since 2009.
