Here at LALtoday, we’re all about getting out in our community and seeing all that our city has to offer — but we also love our alone time.

Whether you prefer quieter social events, feel drained by excess socialization, or just need a push to get out there, we’re here to help with a guide to local organizations and events well suited for the introverts in our Swan City flock.

Silent socialization

Book clubs are on the rise, but you don’t have to be chatty to get in on the fun. Check out these silent book club meet-ups where you can bring your own book to independently read alongside others, followed by optional conversation.

Enjoying a beverage while reading in the library’s Main Branch will always be one of our go-to quiet Lakeland activities.

Laid back libations

Like the idea of grabbing a drink somewhere, but dislike the noise and hubbub? Try these spots:

  • Revival | The only talking you’ll need to do here is ordering your drink of choice — ours is a Lavender Collins — then you can sit back, relax, and maybe even do a bit of people-watching.
  • Rogue Coffee | Settle in with a chocolate chip cookie and strawberry boba from this hidden gem cafe in Downtown West for a quiet afternoon of good tunes.
  • Black & Brew Coffee House and Bistro | Head to the Lake Morton location, grab a latte to-go, then take it into the Lakeland Public Library to sip silently while you browse the stacks.

Let animals do the talking

If you have a furry friend, you have an instant conversation starter — and a simple way to bond with people over a shared interest.

  • Dog parks | Head to one of the City of Lakeland’s four dog parks around town to play fetch with Fido while connecting with fellow pup parents.
  • Kitty Cat Lounge | Head into the cat room to play with the kitties, or stay in the mid-century modern cafe to play a board game.
  • Purrology Cafe | Order a Lotus Energy drink to enjoy in the cat room, but be warned, the kitties might try to steal your drink as they steal your heart. Ask us how we know.

    Clubs for true connection

Sometimes, introverts are just seeking deeper, more meaningful connections over fun activities. Try joining a group or getting involved in a way that interests you.

    • Run/walk clubs | Running and walking are simple ways to socialize without pressure. (Don’t wanna chat? You’re focusing on breathing correctly, duh.) Find the right fit for you at one of these four Lakeland running and walking clubs.
    • Volunteer | Whether you love to work outdoors or have a heart for the arts, find a cause that you’re passionate about and meet other like-minded individuals as you lend a helping hand.
    • Knit One, Crochet Too | Sit and stitch a while as you socialize with (or just sit in the presence of) other crafters while working on your current projects.
