Last August, The Lakeland City Fire Department produced a short recruitment campaign titled “Igniting Change.” The campaign is a call to women who are considering a career as a firefighter. There are currently 8 women who work at the Lakeland City Fire Department, making up 4% of the national average. The department is currently reaching out to girls as young as 12, so the effects of whether the campaign has inspired women to work in firefighting may not be known until much later. However, the LKLD Fire Department will start measuring next year to see if the efforts have created any sparks. ℗
