If you’re anything like me, overdue library fees have slowly become a part of your monthly budget. No shame, this is a safe space, fellow librophiles.

But before you book it to the library to refresh your collection this October (dibs on bram stoker), let me introduce you to my new bff, Hoopla.

What is hoopla exactly?

Hoopla is a free digital streaming service for local library users to access eBooks, eAudiobooks, music, movies, + TV shows using your own electronic device (computer, phone, tablet...you get the picture).

What does this mean for you?

You can borrow your favorite books + movies without ever leaving home. And since Hoopla’s entire goal is to help you gain access to local library content, it has helped drive library ebooks to success in over 1,600 systems, including our very own, Lakeland Public Library. Because of this, we can rest assured that the institution of public service that libraries are built on are becoming even more relevant to an online generation.

So, what do you need to join?

First, get yourself a library card. Cards are free for Polk County residents. Next, grab your electronic device and download the hoopla app or go to their website.

Once you make an account and pick the content you’d like to borrow, voilá, a free public library right at your lovely fingertips. Did I mention the entertainment you’re borrowing will return itself automatically? (Ad mortem, late fees.)

Contrary to what some may think, local libraries are more than stale reminders of a bygone era. And even if your entertainment life is primarily digital these days, did you know the Lakeland Public Library offers a list of classes, programs + events? Don’t believe me? Check it out for yourself. (Because let’s be honest, you’re probably a little overdue.)

So, now that you know what all the Hoopla is about, enjoy your Lakeland library life upgrade + be sure to send me all your fall book recommendations.

Anyone else pretty thankful we live in an era of instant gratification?

-Kaylee
