If the sight of orange barricades on West Pipkin Road gives you heart palpitations, you’re not alone. When it comes to construction zones, this roadway widening project in southwest Lakeland is one of the most frequently mentioned in our inbox.

As the project inches toward completion, look back at how it came to be and what Lakelanders can expect in the coming months.

The backstory

The project kicked off in 2021, sparked by rising traffic congestion from the county’s exponential growth. It focused on widening West Pipkin Road from two lanes to up to four lanes between Medulla Road + South Florida Avenue, as well as improving drainage, signage, and safety.

The timeline

Initially, the project was expected to take two years and cost ~$42 million. Due to delays from utility relocations, found asbestos, and additional required repairs, it’s still going more than four years later. Furthermore, its new price tag sits around $55.6 million as a result of rising material costs.

Polk County’s Roads and Drainage Director Jay Jarvis shared with The Ledger that the project’s contract goes until May of 2025, but construction is wrapping up on the final portion from Harden Boulevard to Medulla Road. The Harden Boulevard to South Florida Avenue portion was completed + reopened in March of 2024.

What Lakelanders are saying

Since the project’s inception, readers have reached out to us to share their sentiments:

  • “Are we ever going to see road construction completed? It creates a hardship for many residents of the broader area.” — Duke H.
  • “Not only has this project taken an incredibly long time, it seems like they still have a long way to go! Our family frequents these roads daily, so we continue to pray that this craziness ends soon!” — Jo U.
  • “It has certainly taken a long time for this project, but I have never had a real problem traveling through the construction area. Never any long delays. Hope it is done soon though.” — Carol G.
  • “I have simply learned to avoid the area, I will probably never travel those roads unless someone else is driving.” — TS Moore
  • “The widening project for the intersection of Pipkin/South Florida Ave. has NOT improved. It now takes as long, if not longer, to turn left (north) on South Florida from Pipkin. The dedicated left-turn lane is not long enough, and it creates a bottleneck for those wishing to drive east on Pipkin through the intersection.” — Ken M.
  • “It’s insane how long this project has taken. As growth continues to increase, by the time they’re done it will need to be widened again! But isn’t that how road construction goes?” — Phyllis S.
  • “I live off of Dossey Road and Pipkin and these past four years have been a nightmare. Trying to turn east each day is a matter of life or death. The issues with water leaks has me concerned about potential sinkholes down the road and our cars are taking a beating with all the holes, construction debris and other items in the road.” — Geralyn B.
  • “They have safely made every entry and exit to business and home during this time. Did you see the sidewalks, sewers, and traffic lights? This may be taking a long time, but it has been planned with safety first in mind. I live off Pipkin, drive it almost daily and admire all the work being done.” — Anonymous
  • “Pipkin has a problem with flooding after heavy rains. Hope the new drainage ditches are able to handle the heavy downpours.” — Gracee
  • “I just hope it’s finished soon. I understand the need to alleviate the congestion but it’s been dragging on.” — Ryan H.
