If you see some boats that *don’t quite look like boats* on the water this weekend, know that the Lakeland Cardboard Boat Challenge is back on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Lake Hollingsworth Boat Ramp.

The event aims to raise awareness of our city’s lakes and waterways and educate locals about how they can be more environmentally conscious when it comes to our waters – even through small lifestyle choices that we make every day.

The challenge:

  • Build a boat out of cardboard and duct tape.
  • Put two people inside to race around a course.
  • Be the first to make it across the finish line without sinking.

To reinforce the reason behind the event, all cardboard boats must be made with a “Lakes” awareness theme. Boats are either built on-site or pre-built (for different races/divisions). It’s $35 to participate – register here. Don’t wanna race, but wanna be involved? It’s free for spectators (and cheering on from the “sidelines” is welcomed).

On top of the boat racing rounds, environmental exhibitors will provide kids’ activities, info on ways to protect our water resources and more.
