American Education Week takes place November 13-17, so it’s only fitting that there’s tons of news coming out of Lakeland-area schools lately. Grab your notebooks, pencils, and flashcards — class is in session.
Polk County Public Schools
The Great American Teach-In, a nationwide event that celebrates American Education Week, is on the books for Nov. 14-16. Polk residents can sign up to speak at Crystal Lake Middle, Griffin Elementary, Blake Academy, North Lakeland Elementary, and Carlton Palmore Elementary about how school helped them succeed.
Florida Southern College
Florida Southern College’s Sharp Family Tourism + Education Center opened its doors for tours on Oct. 31, 2013. In the last 10 years, it has seen 120,000+ annual visitors. Read up on 10 things you might not know about the center, then book a tour to see what it’s like for yourself.
Southeastern University
Also celebrating a 10-year milestone is Southeastern University. The Fire Football team first took the field a decade ago. Watch this documentary to hear first-hand accounts from the school’s leadership, inaugural coach, and first players. Head to Victory Field for their next game against Ave Maria University on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
Polk State College
Prospective Polk State students can attend an open house on Thursday, Nov. 2, 5-7 p.m. in the Lakeland Technology Building’s LTB 1100. Meet with faculty and staff and learn about student life at the college. Open enrollment for spring 2024 classes begins Nov. 6.
Florida Polytechnic University
Florida Polytechnic University president Randy Avent and Global Innovation Program Director Karel Coosemans recently hosted a fireside chat at the university’s annual Corporate Impact Summit. During the talk, they discussed their partnership and plans for IFF’s Citrus Innovation Center, which will have a grand opening in 2025.
