New indoor pickleball facilities planned for Lakeland

If you can’t stand the heat, get into the kitchen at these forthcoming spots just for playing pickleball.

Pickleball is a big dill in the sports world, quickly becoming the country’s top growing sport. Lakelanders have hoped to see more courts around town, even in places like the former Sears building, and those dreams of dink shots could be coming true soon.

In January, the Dill Dinkers franchise announced plans to open 20 locations in the Lakeland + Tampa areas. These clubs offer indoor courts that are open to both visitors and members. The biz told us it hasn’t signed any leases yet, so opening dates are still TBA.

Meanwhile, TBPB Pickleball Academy received approval for a zoning change from the Planning and Zoning Board to allow for indoor courts in an industrial space on Gateway Boulevard in southwest Lakeland. It’s now eyeing a mid-May opening for this “Gateway” location.

Pro tip: You don’t have to wait until these facilities open to work on your volley. Prepare to be a paddle pro by playing at a local court.

Would you be a regular at an indoor club like these? Serve us your thoughts — the pickleball is in your court.
