Born & Bread Bakehouse named James Beard Awards semifinalist

Born & Bread made the shortlist for the Outstanding Bakery category, becoming the first in the Lakeland area to be recognized by the prestigious James Beard Awards.

Raise a celebratory cruffin. Born & Bread Bakehouse, located in Lakeland’s Dixieland district, was named a 2026 James Beard Awards semifinalist — and as far as we know, it’s the first Lakeland-area eatery to ever receive a nod.

The James Beard Awards began in 1990 to recognize the top culinary professionals in the US, with awards for everything from pastry chefs to cocktail pros. Born & Bread is one of just 20 nationwide bakeries recognized on the Outstanding Bakery category.

How does it feel to make the shortlist? “I feel pride that many people around the country will look at nominations, see Lakeland, FL next to our bakery name, and ask themselves, ‘Where’s Lakeland?’” Born & Bread owner Jennifer Smurr told us. “Our small and unassuming town, that I once wanted to escape from, is the heart and soul of Born & Bread.”

Everything can be made into a croissant at Born & Bread, from muffins to bagels.

You can’t escape the effect the bakery has had on Lakeland, from its early days at the downtown farmers market to its booming bakehouse in Dixieland. Pastry aficionados travel from all over to taste Smurr’s bakes, from sourdough sandwiches to signature cruffins — a cross between a croissant and a muffin.

“We stand tall in where we started, and where we’re headed, because of the community that has lifted it up from day one,” Smurr said. “It’s an honor to be the first in our area recognized by the James Beard Foundation.”

The semifinalist lists will be whittled down to the top nominees, to be announced on Tuesday, March 31. Then, the winners will be awarded on Monday, June 15.

While we wait to hear if Born & Bread Bakehouse makes the cut, visit Wednesday-Saturday at 1113 S. Florida Ave. to try our go-to: Berry White cruffins, Benton’s bacon breakfast sandwiches, and peanut butter oat cold brew.
