Meet a performer before Disney on Ice comes to Lakeland

We sat down with one of the show’s ice skaters to learn what it’s like to be part of the magic as the cast rehearses in Lakeland at the RP Funding Center.

You don’t have to go to Orlando to find Disney magic. The cast + crew of Disney on Ice have been rehearsing at the RP Funding Center before they bring the next touring season of “Frozen and Encanto” to life. We met performer Alessio Medini to find out what it’s like ahead of their show there this weekend.

Medini first started ice skating at 3 years old in Germany, learning the ropes from his professional skater parents. He’s been with Feld Entertainment, the company behind Disney on Ice, since last year. Keep an eye out for him waltzing on ice during Queen Elsa’s coronation, welcoming the Family Madrigal, and skating in his favorite number, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

This show first premiered in Lakeland in 2022, before Medini joined, and it’s his first time visiting Swan City. “I like it a lot,” he told us. “I haven’t seen that much because we are rehearsing every day. But, the little I saw is very nice and it’s very green and it’s very cute.” We’ll take it.

Before he got back to rehearsal, we asked Medini what advice he would give to anyone in the audience this weekend who feels inspired to get on the ice. “If people want to skate, I think it’s a great sport to start when you’re young, and then you can develop a lot, but even if you’re older, you can still start,” he said. “They should just start and see how it’s going, not be afraid of falling — that happens to us in the show — and just continue.”

Catch the show on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. at the RP Funding Center. Feeling inspired to start skating? Check out the Lakeland Ice Arena’s Learn to Skate program.
