8 local college courses we wish we would have taken

When I was an undergrad, my friends who had recently entered “the real world” kept reminding me to take advantage of every opportunity college has to offer – sign up for cool electives (not ashamed to say I was in a SEU theatre troupe all four years of school), join an intramural, and get as much free food as you can at organization fairs.

Now I fully realize that my four years of waking up 15 minutes before my 10 a.m. “Magazine Design and Production” class (where I got to hone my Photoshop skills + design full spread magazine layouts) were truly more precious than gold.

Here are 8 cool, intriguing, or just plain fun courses offered by local colleges that I would take if I could turn back time…

👩‍🎓HUM 2310 - World Mythology | Polk State College | This class focuses on the universality, importance, and meaning of myth with content like heroes + deities from around the world, creation stories, and mythical creatures. Wouldn’t it be (dio) nys (us) to school your friends on trivia night? Sorry that pun was pretty terrible, I apollo-gize.

👩‍🎓ATF 2210L - Commercial Pilot Flight | Polk State College | If people are always saying you have your head in the clouds - give them more reason to mean it. Study all the details of flying a plane like how to chart a map, understand weather conditions, flight planning, aeronautical decision making + more. “Now, is there anyone on board who can land this plane?”

👩‍🎓CAP 4630 - Artificial Intelligence | Florida Polytechnic University | Maybe Malfunction Junction wouldn’t exist if this class had been around years + years ago. This class gives you an understanding of Artificial Intelligence, focusing on planning, game playing, and vision.

👩‍🎓EEL 5664C - Autonomous Robotic Systems | Florida Polytechnic University | Design, assemble + program a scale-model autonomous, self-driving vehicle. The final exam is a demonstration of what you’ve learned in a Grand Prix time trial race.

👩‍🎓THE 2430 - Costume Design | Florida Southern College | Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. This course also includes a survey of costume history and beginner knowledge on sewing + tailoring. As a theatre geek, I’d totally sign up for this today if I was allowed.

👩‍🎓SPA 3335 - Latin American Film and Fiction | Florida Southern College | Azuela. Borges. Allende. Sábato. Cortázar. García Márquez. Learn about the history of famous Hispanic writers, the different styles + influences – and develop a newfound appreciation for your favorite films.

👩‍🎓COMM 2803 - Situation Comedy | Southeastern University | No more searching for the right snappy comeback. This class will teach how the production of a situation comedy works in writing, producing, acting, directing, promoting, and musical scoring of a situation television comedy. Take note.

👩‍🎓FINC 1903 - Personal FInance | Southeastern University | Honestly, it should be a required course. Learn how to manage your money, credit cards, investments, pay taxes, insurance + all the other financial hassles that come along with “adulting” post graduation.

Oh how my life would have been different if only I knew these classes existed when I was in college. I’d definitely win every Greek mythology trivia night + probably would have been a bit more financially stable entering “the real world.”

Here’s to learning something new everyday,
