DYK that when you turn 65 you’re eligible for Medicare? The federal health insurance program offers applicants different options to ensure they’re receiving the health care coverage they need – whether it’s simply paying for prescriptions or full coverage for major health issues.

So, what does that actually mean? Here’s what you need to know about Medicare so you’re prepared when you hit that milestone birthday:

Know the difference between Part A and Part B.

Part A is hospital insurance. Inpatient hospital care, lab tests, skilled nursing facility, surgery, hospice + home health care are covered on this plan. Part B is an optional medical insurance, which requires a premium. It covers additional home health care services, some preventative services + medical equipment. Part D is an additional plan that covers prescriptions.

If you opt to only have Part A, you don’t have to pay a premium. However, it’s strongly recommended to enroll in Part B unless you have employer-based insurance.

Know when you can enroll.

If you aren’t getting Social Security, you may need to enroll in Medicare. The Medicare enrollment period for Part A lasts 7 months. It begins 3 months before your birthday month and ends 3 months after. You can add Part B at a later point if you decide you need extra coverage. Trinity Medical Group breaks down specific enrollment periods here.

You might be automatically enrolled.

If you’re receiving Social Security benefits, you don’t need to enroll in Medicare. The Social Security Administration will automatically sign you up at age 65 for parts A and B of Medicare.

There are resources out there to help you.

Navigating Medicare enrollment can be easy if you have all of the information and resources in your hands. Trinity Medical Group offers a detailed list of additional resources to help you make informed decisions.

Once you’ve decided which Medicare or Medicare Advantage plan is right for you, you can enroll by visiting or calling your local Social Security office or applying online.
