We know the question on your mind, Lakelanders — when’s it going to get cooler? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for September, October, and November.

While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what fall will bring.

Reminder: Fall starts on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Still sweating into September

Typically in Lakeland, September’s temperatures fluctuate between an average low of 73° and an average high of 88°, but the heat index can still feel as hot as 105º. Keep your umbrellas close this month — hurricane season peaks around mid-September.

Optimistic about October

In October, the average temps are between a low of 67° and a high of 83°. You’ll most likely still feel nice and warm while you walk through the Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market or stand in line at Born & Bread Bakehouse, but on the bright side, Lakeland in October is known for its gentle breeze.

No fear November

Average highs in November drop to 77° while the lows dip into the high 50s with an average of 59°. Daylight saving time will also end on Sunday, Nov. 3, so we’ll have less sunshine each day leading up to Thanksgiving.

Which unhinged Lowe’s Halloween decoration are you?

A series of images highlighting outdoor Halloween decorations including life size skeletons
If you’re as obsessed with Halloween decor as these locals are, you’re going to love Lowe’s new collection. | Photos provided by COLAtoday + GVLtoday.
Every year the life-size animatronic Halloween decorations get bigger, spookier, and well — more chaotic. This year is no exception, so we want to know:

Which life-sized Halloween decoration best matches your personality?
  1. The 8-ft skeleton: You have classic taste. You don’t believe in following the trends. You know what you like and you stick to it.
  2. The Haunted Harbor Sea Captain: You’re a natural-born leader. You love to plan a night out and always know the best new spots in town (thanks to LALtoday).
  3. The Dancing Wednesday Addams: You’re sarcastic and have a dark sense of humor, but you’re a loyal friend and an accidental trendsetter.
  4. “The Haunted Mansion” Musical Headless Knight: You’re kind + lovable but often forgetful. Your friends are used to helping you search for your phone.
Bone-us: Lowe’s has even more creepy characters to help you become your neighborhood’s chaos agent this Halloween season.^

🕶️ Cool for the summer

With Labor Day behind us, summer has unofficially ended. The season might have brought us national fads like “brat summer,” but we wanted to know what was really hot in Lakeland this summer — besides the sun.

We turned to Google Trends to see what locals searched for from Memorial Day through Labor Day, minus political results. Turns out, Lakelanders were feeling especially sporty this summer. The term “Copa America” saw the most search growth compared to prior months, but the Olympics weren’t far behind. “Olympics medal count,” “Olympics,” and “Olympics schedule” were all top 10 search queries in the area.

What else set Google ablaze this summer? Here are some fast facts from the Lakeland area:
  • Most popular Olympic sport: Artistic swimming
  • Most popular Olympic athlete: Simone Biles
  • Most popular movie: “Inside Out 2"
  • Most popular song (based on YouTube searches): “Houdini” by Eminem
  • Most searched weather term: Hurricane tracker

With the arrival of “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice,” I think our first fall trend may be upon us. Sounds like a great opportunity to head to Silver Moon Drive-In Theatre to me.
