Lakeland city commissioners and staff will meet today and tomorrow for their biannual Strategic Planning Retreat. Topics on the agenda include results from community + departmental surveys, plus deep dives into city infrastructure, public safety, and quality of life.
The retreat is open for Lakelanders to join in person at the RP Funding Center or watch online. Day one runs from 8 a.m. to around 5 p.m., and day two begins at 8 a.m. and will end closer to 2 p.m. Both days will be broadcast on the Lakeland Government Network, and we’ll bring you the highlights in upcoming newsletters.
Pro tip: Community members are invited, but this retreat does not include time for public comment.

This weekend, the global City Nature Challenge goes local at Bonnet Springs Park. Visit to take photos of wild plants and animals or record nature sounds, then upload them to iNaturalist to help scientists. Last year, 3.3 million observations were uploaded worldwide.

Ice, ice baby. Winn-Dixie is piloting an autonomous ice microfactory in Plant City that will be run by AI. Relocalize, the tech company behind the microfactory, says producing the ice on a smaller scale + shipping to local stores saves time and energy. (Fox 13 News)

The 2024 Strategic Planning Meeting was where commissioners approved plans for Munn Park’s redesign, so I’ll be watching today’s meeting closely to see if anything big comes up to share with readers. (If you’re wondering, there haven’t been any updates on the park renovations in a bit.)
