❄️ What’s with this winter weather?

Even the Sunshine State isn’t immune to the effects of the recent winter storm. Stay up to date with this roundup of Lakeland’s top winter weather headlines, best read with a warm drink in hand.

The National Weather Service issued a cold weather advisory for Polk County, in effect until 9 a.m. A freeze watch will follow tonight, and temperatures could dip below 24º.

Lakeland is doing its part to help those dealing with snow + ice up north. Lakeland Electric sent 21 mutual aid crew members to South Carolina ahead of the storm, and Hurricane Hunters flew out from NOAA’s Lakeland base to gather crucial data for forecasters.

The weather impacted air travel across the country, and Avelo offered to rebook passengers on canceled flights from Lakeland International Airport. If you’re more concerned about what’s on the ground, UF/IFAS has plenty of winter plant protection tips.

When your child is sick, but it’s a Saturday and you can’t wait for a regularly scheduled appointment with the pediatrician, Watson Clinic’s Pediatrics department offers a solution with Saturday appointments for sick visits.

These Saturday sick visits now take place 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. exclusively at the Watson Clinic Highlands location in South Lakeland. This location enhances the level of convenience for pediatric patients, including on-site access to laboratory and radiology capabilities.

Saturday sick visits can be made day-of by calling any of the following department numbers: 863-607-3346, 863-680-7337, or 863-647-8012.

Meanwhile, Pediatrician Dr. Jolie Szocki now treats patients exclusively from Watson Clinic South, where she offers more same-day availability for sick visits.

Discover more information on these moves or schedule an appointment with any of Watson Clinic’s pediatric specialists here.

The Wrap

I live for these rare chilly days in Florida, so my song selection would have to be “Cold as Ice” by Foreigner. Let’s see if Lakeland breaks its previous low temperature record of 20º, first set in December 1962.
