The Southeast is in for more wintry weather, with Polk County under a cold weather advisory since 12 a.m. today. | Map via National Weather Service
Even the Sunshine State isn’t immune to the effects of the recent winter storm. Stay up to date with this roundup of Lakeland’s top winter weather headlines, best read with a warm drink in hand.
The National Weather Service issued a cold weather advisory for Polk County, in effect until 9 a.m. A freeze watch will follow tonight, and temperatures could dip below 24º.
Lakeland is doing its part to help those dealing with snow + ice up north. Lakeland Electric sent 21 mutual aid crew members to South Carolina ahead of the storm, and Hurricane Hunters flew out from NOAA’s Lakeland base to gather crucial data for forecasters.
The weather impacted air travel across the country, and Avelo offered to rebook passengers on canceled flights from Lakeland International Airport. If you’re more concerned about what’s on the ground, UF/IFAS has plenty of winter plant protection tips.

I live for these rare chilly days in Florida, so my song selection would have to be “Cold as Ice” by Foreigner. Let’s see if Lakeland breaks its previous low temperature record of 20º, first set in December 1962.
