We’ve nearly made it to the end of the year, but before we log off for the holidays, we’re celebrating the top stories of the year. Check back each day this week to reflect on Lakeland’s biggest developments, best new restaurants, and favorite stories of 2025.

Earlier this year, we learned that this location would become a “prototype store” following a full store remodel. Now we know that means fresh food bars, a cafe, and a mezzanine seating area.
Of course, that isn’t even scratching the surface. Tap below to see more 2025 openings, like Nordstrom Rack, Inklings Book Shoppe + the Depot Arts District.
We’ve shared the top developments, but now we’re rounding up our top picks of the year — and we want to hear from you. Shout out your favorites in these categories:
We’ll drive for excellent events — feel free to add points in nearby towns, too.

Ranked
One Florida city took the top spot on WalletHub’s list of the “Best Cities for New Year’s Eve” — and sadly, it wasn’t Lakeland. You’ll have to travel to Orlando for booming fireworks + all-night parties, but don’t sleep on the local NYE scene.
Cause
$7.1 billion. That’s how much philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated to nonprofits this year. Here in Swan City, you don’t need deep pockets to do your part. You can give your time, kindness, or a few hours of hard work to one of these deserving volunteer opportunities instead. (ABC News)
Eat
You donut want to miss this. Krispy Kreme was just named Florida’s most popular donut chain, edging out Dunkin’ Donuts. Want to branch out? Grab a hole bunch of locally made bites from Lakeland’s donut shops.
Jobs
“The process is super easy and far more cost-effective than using a recruiter.” That’s what one business owner said about hiring through our Job Board. See for yourself — post your open positions for free.

Can you believe the AGB just opened its expansion this year? It’s fun to look back at its past, but I’m also over-the-top excited for its upcoming exhibitions. Starting in February, work by my favorite artist, Alexander Calder, will be on display. I literally screamed when I saw the announcement.
