A message from our team

We’ve nearly made it to the end of the year, but before we log off for the holidays, we’re celebrating the top stories of the year. Check back each day this week to reflect on Lakeland’s biggest developments, best new restaurants, and favorite stories of 2025.

This year’s top 3 biggest openings

Everywhere we looked this year, a new development was popping up. These were the biggest ones that drew our readers to opening day lines and ribbon-cutting ceremonies in 2025.

Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art Kerr Wing
The year kicked off with the opening of an $8 million expansion here, including more gallery and classroom space, plus renovations to the existing museum.

Bob Adams Family Community YMCA
A name wasn’t the only new thing in store for the Y this year — members can enjoy upgraded exercise equipment, indoor turf fields, an elevated track, and more.

The Lake Miriam Square Publix is now open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 4730 S. Florida Ave.

Publix Super Market at Lake Miriam Square
Earlier this year, we learned that this location would become a “prototype store” following a full store remodel. Now we know that means fresh food bars, a cafe, and a mezzanine seating area.

Of course, that isn’t even scratching the surface. Tap below to see more 2025 openings, like Nordstrom Rack, Inklings Book Shoppe + the Depot Arts District.

Do these exquisite sunsets count as a home feature? This Winter Haven home situated on the Chain of Lakes is an outdoor-lover’s dream, complete with a heated pool, panoramic views, and a private boathouse on Lake Roy.

Film

If “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is on your watchlist this December, you’re in good company. The 1989 film is the most popular holiday film in Florida, per a new PixlParade report. Catch it at the Polk Theatre next Monday, Dec. 22 at 6:30 p.m.

Ranked

One Florida city took the top spot on WalletHub’s list of the “Best Cities for New Year’s Eve” — and sadly, it wasn’t Lakeland. You’ll have to travel to Orlando for booming fireworks + all-night parties, but don’t sleep on the local NYE scene.

Cause

$7.1 billion. That’s how much philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated to nonprofits this year. Here in Swan City, you don’t need deep pockets to do your part. You can give your time, kindness, or a few hours of hard work to one of these deserving volunteer opportunities instead. (ABC News)

Eat

You donut want to miss this. Krispy Kreme was just named Florida’s most popular donut chain, edging out Dunkin’ Donuts. Want to branch out? Grab a hole bunch of locally made bites from Lakeland’s donut shops.

Jobs

“The process is super easy and far more cost-effective than using a recruiter.” That’s what one business owner said about hiring through our Job Board. See for yourself — post your open positions for free.

Community

Registration is open for the 12th Annual Promise Run to support Hollis Cancer Center. The event is set for March 7, 2026, and includes a 10K and 5K race. The Promise Run takes place rain or shine at the Lake Mirror Promenade in downtown Lakeland. Learn more + register.*

The Wrap

Can you believe the AGB just opened its expansion this year? It’s fun to look back at its past, but I’m also over-the-top excited for its upcoming exhibitions. Starting in February, work by my favorite artist, Alexander Calder, will be on display. I literally screamed when I saw the announcement.
