⛳️ Reaching new Heights

Break out the birthday cake. The City of Lakeland is celebrating 100 years of the Cleveland Heights Golf Course. Before you join the ceremony at the course tomorrow at 10 a.m., look back on how fore it’s come.

In 1923, real estate developer H.A. Stahl bought 560 acres of land south of Lake Hollingsworth. (The price tag for that much land back then? Just under $1 million.) He transformed the area into the Cleveland Heights neighborhood, named after his Ohio home.

His grand plans for the neighborhood included a golf course, which opened in 1925, but things took a turn for the worse during the Great Depression. Stahl was turning out empty pockets, so the City of Lakeland took over his properties.

Today, the golf course is still owned and maintained by the city. If you can’t make the ceremony, book a tee time to enjoy this weekend’s sunny weather on the greens.

The Wrap

I was excited to hear that Golden Ridge Groves opens today and is helping to keep the citrus industry alive, but I didn’t know this twist. It bills itself as an “indoor U-pick” since the grapefruit are grown under 2-3 acres of protective screening. That means no bugs and healthier trees.
