You can become a Swan City expert in no time. | Photo by @emnoel_
Lakeland’s most iconic bird is the swan, but we have a special place in our hearts for another avian — the snowbird. Defined as a northerner who moves to southern states (like Florida) during the cooler months, many snowbirds call Lakeland home during the holiday season and even into the new year.
Whether you’re a long-term part-time Lakelander or joining the flock this year, keep reading for our snowbird’s guide to Swan City.

Meet Ruth Elder: Lakeland’s first aviatrix

Have you ever heard about the two Lakeland residents who nearly made aviation history by flying across the Atlantic?
In September of 1927, copilots Elder and George William Haldeman Sr. flew to New York, and on Oct. 11, they left from Long Island in their Stinson Detroiter monoplane — the “American Girl” — in an attempt to make Elder the first woman to fly across the ocean. Amelia Earhart’s solo flight took place the following year in 1928.
That’s just the beginning. Click below to learn about Elder and Haldeman’s flight and what followed.
