Lakeland-based startups and small businesses we’re watching

There are tons of startups and small businesses to watch in Swan City. Luckily for us, we have an expert in the field who can help us break it down.
We connected with Christin Strawbridge, President of Catapult Lakeland, to learn more about the difference between startups and small businesses. “I am a believer that it is helpful to differentiate between a startup and a small business. They both can positively impact our local economy, but they need different resources and grow in different ways.”
Funding — Startups require initial investments; small businesses are self-sustaining and generate their own revenue.
Growth — Startups aim to be market disruptors who take over their market; small businesses aim to be profitable alongside other businesses in their market.
End goal — Startups often hope to transition into a larger company or be bought out by a larger company; small businesses hope to stay in business.
Who we’re watching

Are your Lakeland favorites written in the stars? | Photo by @lisburns
We recently shared our guide to the zodiac signs as Lakeland neighborhoods, and from our reader feedback, it seems like they truly were written in the stars.
Here’s what a few of you said:
“Mine is spot on. As a Sagittarius I absolutely love going to Tampa and Orlando.” — Chip B.
“As an Aquarius? Yes.” — @radxcity
“Ha! My neighborhood and my sign are the same!” — Joyce P.
“As a Pisces, yes.” — @emmalaurenpoole
This made us curious — what would each zodiac sign visit or buy from the Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market? The market is closing in August for its annual hiatus, but when it returns in September, we hope to have a full zodiac-inspired guide.
That’s where you come in. Tell us your zodiac sign and your favorite farmers market stop in this 60-second survey — we might feature it in our guide.

I’m a Taurus and Connor is a Virgo — our favorite spots at the Downtown Lakeland Farmers Curb Market are Milk and Honey Macarons and East of These, respectively. Help us build our guide in this survey, it only takes a couple of seconds.
