Restaurant Roundup: Meet your new favorite Lakeland restaurants

From sandwiches to tropical drinks, Lakeland has plenty of eateries on the horizon. Here are a few we’re watching:
Jessie’s Gourmet Sandwich Cafe, 1825 E. Edgewood Dr.
This new sandwich spot is coming to the location formerly held by Julio’s Sandwich Shop — which has since moved to 4525 S. Florida Ave. in Alamo Plaza. While a menu and opening date are TBA, we’re already excited about this Scarpa’s Italian-adjacent sandwich eatery.
Lakeland Loft and Island Breeze owner Solomon Wassef shared this rendering of the upcoming biz.
Island Breeze Tiki Bar, 201 E. Main St.
Soon, you won’t need to make a whole beach trip to enjoy your favorite tropical drinks. Island Breeze was approved to bring blended tropical beverages and an updated facade to downtown Lakeland, at the location formerly home to Dart World Gaming Arena.
Sabrina’s Delicacies, 4610 Cleveland Heights Blvd.
This formerly mobile-only biz is bringing its charcuterie boards to a brick-and-mortar shop near Tea Largo. The best part? You’ll still be able to enjoy grab-and-go boards in addition to dine-in seating.
Jeremiah’s Italian Ice, 2117 E. County Rd. 540A
Gelati, Italian ice, and soft-serve ice cream are coming to Lakeland’s south side. Jeremiah’s is known for unique flavors like lemon basil, spicy hot chocolate, melon fresca, and more.
KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot, 1568 Town Center Dr.
You’ll soon be able to enjoy your custom hotpot creations at the former Crispers location in Lakeside Village. An opening date is yet to be announced, but in the meantime, you can learn our pro tips for visiting a hotpot restaurant.

TBAYtoday City Editor Brad here— I’m jumping into LALtoday to share my experience of attending a Publix GreenWise Market Tap Takeover event — a craft beer sampling event happening monthly in the POURS section of Publix GreenWise Market locations throughout Florida.
Join me as I sip my way through a wide selection craft beers — and share how you can try this for yourself.
What we tried
I spent a delightful couple of hours indulging in conversations + tasting a fantastic collection of craft brews. This month’s featured vendor was Stella Artois. With the guidance of Stella representative Deacon and the skilled bartenders, I had the opportunity to sample a handful of the beers on tap.
$40 million. That’s how much Polk is applying for in grant funding for improved broadband service. The county hopes to incentivize providers to expand their service areas to parts of Polk with low upload speeds using anchor institutions like hospitals, fire stations, and colleges. (The Ledger)
Arts
The award winners for the 2023 Citizens Bank & Trust Mayfaire by-the-Lake art festival are in: The $5,000 Best of Show prize went to Nathan Miller of Covington, GA. Tech
Fully automated tractors could be the future of farming here in Polk County, according to Polk farmer and county commissioner Bill Braswell. Bill allowed California-based Monarch Tractor, a battery-operated AI tractor manufacturer, to mow his field. The tractor uses cameras to communicate with farmers for a more hands-off approach. (WFLA)
Development
The nation’s first unmanned aircraft control towers could be coming to the Bartow + Winter Haven airports. The remote-controlled, camera-operated control towers — which look similar to cell phone towers — are widely used throughout Europe. The $1.23 million project will improve safety and transition the areas from uncontrolled to controlled airspace. (The Ledger)

Wait, what’s a special use permit? Understanding development terms in Lakeland, Florida
Catapult 3.0 interior
While you wait for new developments like Island Breeze or 4 Rivers Smokehouse, use our guide to understand the terminology in various city releases and news reports.
Here are some definitions of common terms paired with ongoing projects and examples you might recognize in Swan City.
Mixed-Use
Projects that provide more than one purpose in the community, like a building with apartments on top and retail shops on the bottom.
Example: The upcoming Oak Street development will likely have seven stories of residential, retail, and parking space.
Example: The 17-acre site of The Ledger was rezoned to make way for the new Downtown West Gateway development, featuring retail, residential, parking, and office space, plus pedestrian and bike paths.
