Is Lakeland the new Silicon Valley?
Could Lakeland get an innovation district?

Renewable energy, self-driving cars, rocket fuel — the future could start right here in Lakeland. With new projects proposed and underway, plans for a Central Florida Innovation District are top of mind for local officials.
The Innovation District was first dreamed up back in 2019, when Lakeland, Auburndale, and Polk County officials were hoping to build a research park around Florida Polytechnic University. Now, these five developments in that area that could put Lakeland on the technology map.
Renewable energy farm
Williams Acquisition Holding Co., an Oklahoma natural gas company, recently reached out to the City about a renewable energy project. The company owns 4,500 acres of land west off of State Road 33. By adding a solar farm, Lakeland Electric could increase clean energy generation after shutting down one of its coal-powered units.

Suntrax autonomous vehicle test facility
The Florida Department of Transportation and Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise are working on Phase Two of a self-driving car test facility near Florida Polytechnic University. A 2.25-mile oval test track is already in use, and a 200-acre infield with even more testing environments is set to be complete this year.
A first look at the plans for the Citrus Innovation Center
Developments aren’t just happening near Florida Poly. The school has been busy adding to its STEM research and development department. The Applied Research Center opened its doors in August 2022 with 90,000+ sqft of research labs, study and design space, and offices.
South Korean company LowCarbon Hydrogen Corporation plans to build a hydrogen plant in Mulberry. Although this might be far from the possible Innovation District, the plant would boost our local tech rep by creating clean fuel for cars and rockets.

This spring and summer, the Polk Museum of Art welcomes two can’t-miss exhibitions, including the work of one of the most celebrated photographers in the history of art.
The exhibition features 60 photographs by Imogen Cunningham, whose life and career traversed nearly a century.
Cunningham was a female member of the male-dominated f/64 group of photographers (think: Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Willard Van Dyke) and left her indelible stamp on the history + development of modern photography. The exhibition will run through July 15.
Inspired stylistically by Dutch and Flemish masters of the Renaissance + Baroque eras, the paintings of Steven Kenny are eye-catching for their simultaneous mix of the rational and the irrational.
In this exhibition of his work from the past two decades, Steven Kenny invites Lakelanders to enter his imagined world. Visit the museum now through August 6 to see Kenny’s work.

The budget includes several Lakeland projects, including additions to Florida Polytechnic University and Polk State College, Kathleen Road improvements, the Polk Museum of Art’s expansion, and more. Countywide broadband internet improvements weren’t included. (The Ledger)
$1.8 million. That’s how much US Rep. Scott Franklin has requested in federal funding to expand the Bridging Resource and Information Gaps in Human Trafficking (BRIGHT) Network. Quiz: How well do you know Lakeland’s streets?
We’re sure you know where this iconic sign is located. | Image via Google Maps
80%. That was the average score on the Google Street View quiz we shared last week. We created our own Lakeland version of GeoGuessr, an online game that uses Street View to drop you somewhere in the world. Your mission? To use clues to try and pinpoint your exact location on a map.
It turns out our readers are local geography experts. With over 1,300 people taking our quiz, the average score was 8 out of 10. Reader Linda S. found success, telling us, “I took the quiz. I missed two. Not bad, since I haven’t lived in Lakeland since 1975!” Not bad at all, Linda.
Missed the quiz? Take it here to test your street smarts.
As a coffee fiend, I’m very happy that happyfastdelicious will be opening this week. If LALtoday created a custom drink, what would it be? Check out the menu and let us know what you think.
