Cars line a street in downtown Lakeland, leaves are on the ground.

If you’re downtown, don’t miss the Munn Park tree lighting at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

T-minus three days until Thanksgiving — are you ready? Keep these in mind as you check off your to-do list this week:

Closed on Thanksgiving: City + county offices, gated parks, rec centers, libraries, Publix, Walmart, Target, Aldi

Open on Thanksgiving: Non-gated parks, Bonnet Springs Park (6 a.m.-5 p.m.), select restaurants

Travel: Today may be the best time to hit the road — Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be the busiest travel days.

Turkey Trots: A few spots are still available for nearby 5Ks.

Pies: It’s your last chance to pre-order treats for pickup from local bakeries.

Small Business Saturday: Make plans to support local shop owners — more from us on this later this week.

News Notes

Mansion Monday

Feeling “Wicked” this week? This five-bedroom estate in north Lakeland is a shade of green even Elphaba would love, with ceilings high enough to defy gravity — but it’s the peach trees and huge custom closets that would be popular with Glinda.

Drink

Pressed is skipping Thanksgiving and jumping right into Christmas. Its winter menu just dropped, featuring drinks like the Polar Express peppermint mocha and the Night Before Christmas orange maple latte. Try it with one of the new cookies baked in-house.

Film

October saw the lowest revenue generated by movie ticket sales in almost three decades — excluding 2020 for obvious reasons. With the holiday season on the horizon and Oscar season in full swing, we recommend catching a flick at Lakeland’s historic Silver Moon Drive-In to help keep cinema alive. (Variety)

Number

82 million. That’s how many Americans are projected to travel 50+ miles for Thanksgiving — a new AAA record. Hopping on a plane instead? Peruse our Lakeland International Airport guide for parking, security, and gate details — so you can focus on the turkey, not the trip.

Eat

As Samwise Gamgee said, “boil ‘em, mash ‘em, stick ‘em in a stew.” But if you’re looking for more from your potatoes this Thanksgiving, the New York Times has some delicious ideas. However you choose to cook your veggies, local farmers markets + farm stands are the way to go.

Arts

More than 7,500 ft above sea level, an Italian museum is taking art to new heights. The Frattini Bivouac is only accessible by hiking for 6+ hours, and it has no artwork — only a small window overlooking the Alps. It’s not quite as arduous making it to one of Lakeland’s museums. (The Guardian)

The Wrap

If you heard a thwack on Edgewood Drive this weekend, that was just the world’s biggest pickleball stars competing at the PPA Tour Veolia Lakeland Open. I watched some of the action, and these small courts didn’t keep them from big plays. If you missed it, check in on the match results.
A pickleball match in progress on a green court, with spectators sitting in the foreground and other courts visible behind it.

Shout out to the local amateurs who took to the courts as well.
