🐊 Look out for tails on these trails

A group of baby alligators sit on an adult alligator's back in the water at Circle B Bar Reserve. The photo is framed by green leaves and branches.
You may have to look off the trail to see some of Florida’s official state reptile. | Photo submitted by Reader Ethan C.
It’s that time of year again, when Alligator Alley is closed at Circle B Bar Reserve while the reptiles nest following mating season. If you like your hikes with a chance of an alligator sighting, these Lakeland trails could bring you close — just remember these tips for giving them plenty of space.

Gator Creek Reserve
It’s all in the name here. With five walking trails and one equestrian trail, this reserve offers paths for everyone. The elevation change is 22 ft and one of the paths is paved, making this a great option for the whole family.

Colt Creek State Park
This grassy, padded hike boasts a cool breeze and shade if you catch it at the right time. The land was once home to rock mining, timber harvesting, citrus production, and even turpentining.

Se7en Wetlands
This water treatment area-turned-nature park is a must-see for locals. Wear proper shoes and bring enough water to stay hydrated — but leave your furry friends at home.
