Take a peaceful park tour

On the outskirts of the hustle and bustle of downtown Lakeland, you’ll find a lakeside park where you’re encouraged to slow down. Veterans Memorial Park is packed with meaningful tributes to Polk County veterans, law enforcement, first responders, and others who have made an impact on the United States.

Platform Art raised money for this sculpture by artist Becky Ault, called “Friends of Freedom.”

Upon entering the park, located on Lake Beulah Drive, you’ll find 14 monuments and memorials. Many honorees are represented, from the Buffalo Soldiers of the Spanish-American War that camped out on the shores of Lake Wire, to the organizations that support Polk County’s 60,000+ veterans.
Pink roses bloom along a brick walkway in Veteran's Memorial Park, with a lake and trees visible in the background under a blue sky.

You’ll also find the Bicentennial Rose Garden near the park’s north end, which was erected to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Walk the paved paths to each monument to learn more about the stories behind them, or take a seat on a bench beneath the shade of an oak tree for a quiet moment.

Veterans Memorial Park is free to enter, and tomorrow’s NAACP Lakeland Branch Memorial Day Program at 10 a.m. is the perfect time to check it out. Pro tip: There’s a small three-car parking area near the park’s northwest corner, but we’d also recommend finding an open spot at the RP Funding Center.

History

The answer is waiting in the wings

A crowd of theatergoers lines up outside the Palace Theater under a marquee listing "The Shadow Behind the Mask" and "Heading West."

This week, we asked you to hop in our time machine (better known as Google Maps + the Lakeland Public Library archives) to match old pictures with the places there now.

Readers definitely proved their Swan City smarts, but one of the most-missed questions asked what is now at the former Palace Theater.

Before we give the answer, take a look back at these facts:
  • The theater was open downtown from 1925 to 1950.
  • It once featured an orchestra pit + a full stage, with curved opera-style windows.
  • In its heyday, moviegoers could catch flicks like “The Shadow Behind the Mask” + “Jinx Money” and would wait in line for double features.
Ready for the big reveal? We’re surprised the name didn’t give it away — this location is now home to Palace Pizza.
