As we get ready to round out this year, we’re bringing you the stories that have been the true highlights of our year, from historic pieces to new developments and everything in between.
Connor’s pick: Red Lobster’s Lakeland lore | All eyes were on this restaurant chain when it announced nationwide closures this spring, but Lakelanders knew it as a local seafood spot first. I brought you back to its beginnings on the shores of Lake Parker, where its original location still stands today.
Amelia’s pick: Avelo takes flight | This year, we got to see passenger airline service restored at Lakeland International Airport after more than a decade, and I got to be one of the first ones to break the news of its first route. Core memory unlocked.
Connor’s pick: A gold medal-worthy Q+A | It’s not every day you get to interview an Olympian. I met 3x3 basketball player Dylan Travis, who played for Florida Southern, before he set off to compete for Team USA in Paris.
Amelia’s pick: Lacing up our skates | Staying with the sports theme, I got to pivot into the world of flat track roller derby in a sit-down with Swan City Roller Derby + learn how they’re working to change the face of contact sports.
Connor’s pick: Be the broker | The former Sears building at the Lakeland Square Mall isn’t much to look at right now, but it’s holding 155,000 sqft of potential. I got a peek inside this massive space to dream up what could call it home next. Spoiler alert: Lakeland wants entertainment.
Amelia’s pick: By the light of the Silver Moon | When it comes to iconic Lakeland attractions, it’s hard not to put the Silver Moon Drive-In toward the top of the list. I took a deep dive into the history of this slice of silver screens past, and discovered just how much of a Lakeland gem it truly is.

I’ve spent the last few days visiting my folks up north with my husband, and while I love a taste of the cold during this time of year, this Floridian is ready to get back to Swan City and away from the below-freezing temperatures. Did you stay in town for the holidays? Let us know.
