The City of Lakeland will develop a master plan to connect septic systems to city sewers after a state mandate to study the feasibility. It will soon undergo a study of the Water Utilities Department’s coverage area and create the plan by 2029. (LkldNow)

Polk County is in the direct path of Hurricane Milton as it moves east toward Florida from the Gulf of Mexico. Although they say it’s too early to predict how intense it will be, forecasters expect it to strengthen into a major hurricane and bring heavy wind + rain before making landfall by Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Sandbag sites are open across the county today from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The Polk County Emergency Management Division’s Citizen’s Information Line is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. to answer storm-related questions at 863-298-7500.
Polk County Public Schools will be open today, but closed Tuesday, Oct. 8-Thursday, Oct. 10. A decision about Friday is TBA.
Shelters will open tomorrow — due to high winds, the county urges those in mobile homes + RVs to evacuate.
