We know the question on your mind, Lakelanders — when’s it really going to get hot? Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures and precipitation trends to expect in our city for June, July, and August.

While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, here’s a seasonal outlook to help you prepare for what summer will bring.

Reminder: The first day of summer is on Thursday, June 20.

🌡️ Temperature

No surprises here — get ready for the heat. This summer, Lakeland has a 40-50% chance of temperatures being higher than normal.

🌨️ Precipitation

Expect slightly more precipitation. Lakeland also has a 40-50% chance of seeing higher than average rainfall amounts this summer.

☀️ Drought

Polk County is currently under a burn ban due to dry conditions, but drought conditions are expected to decline further into this season.

The Atlantic hurricane season began on Saturday, June 1, and NOAA forecasters are predicting an above-normal season with 17-25 named storms. Learn how you can prepare for hurricanes.

July’s just heating up

If you didn’t think Lakeland was tropical, July might change your mind. Humidity highs begin in this month with an average relative humidity of 79%. We’ll also see the most sunshine of the year in July (10.6 hours per day).

August is hottest

Keep your sunscreen + water bottles close — August is sure to be a scorcher. The average heat index is 113°, and humidity will remain high through the end of summer.

  • $10.80. That’s the amount the average Lakeland Electric customer’s bill could rise if city commissioners approve a fuel rate increase today. If approved to take effect July 1, it would be the first fuel rate increase since summer 2022. (The Ledger)

  • EcoVision Homes could develop 87 townhomes in the Gladys Leggett neighborhood. The developer says the Providence Townhomes would be made of recyclable material and priced for middle-income renters. The land is up for a zoning change vote on June 17. (LkldNow)

  • Average Polk home values increased by 1.8% from March 2023 to March 2024. In Lakeland, the ZIP code with the lowest increase was 33811 at 0.8%. Homes in the 33803 + 33810 ZIP codes saw the highest increase at 4.5%. Check your code’s change. (The Washington Post)

  • Florida’s first Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday of the year began this weekend and runs through Friday, June 14. Some disaster prep supplies will be tax-free (think: pet products, batteries + power banks, tarps, and generators).

  • Don’t have a cow. LoveBird Almost Famous Chicken shared progress photos from its new Winter Haven location, and a hot pink cow on top of the building is the star of the show. The hot chicken restaurant is set to open this summer.
Civic
  • Auburndale city commissioners will vote on whether to allow food trucks within city limits. The amendment up for a vote in today’s meeting would allow food truck owners to set up in a limited capacity at more events and locations. (The Ledger)

  • School’s out for the summer, and Pure Barre is offering membership discounts for students and teachers from June to August. Visit the Lakeside Village studio at 1314 Town Center Dr. E., Ste. 102 to take advantage of the deal.
