Film
Where would you film a Lakeland horror movie?
Swan City meets the big screen: Movies filmed in and around Lakeland
Would you follow in Tim Burton’s footsteps and film at the Southgate Center? | Photo by @grantbournigalphotos
Swan City has served as the backdrop for several spine-chilling movies over the years. Add these creepy classics and thrillers to your fall watchlist.
“Edward Scissorhands” (1990)
Eccentric director Tim Burton used Lakeland as a setting for this cult classic. Eagle-eyed viewers can spot the Southgate Shopping Center arch in several scenes.
“China Moon” (1994)
Ed Harris leads this crime thriller as a detective — don’t worry, no spoilers here. It was shot on location in both Lakeland and Bartow.
“Shakma” (1990)
Horror movie fans may have seen this flick featuring a baboon on a rampage. Lakeland served as a film location, and you can see the downtown Marble Arcade in the opening shots.
Now, you be the director. If you were filming a scary movie in Lakeland, where would you shoot it? We would use a historic Lake Hollingsworth home as a haunted house. Share your idea.
I grew up in Crawfordville, FL, home of Wakulla Springs, where “Creature from the Black Lagoon” was filmed. If I was directing a horror movie, I think I’d copy that idea and shoot it on location on Lake Morton. Just imagine a horror movie about zombie swans.
