Shannon Turbeville, president of the Lakeland Professional Firefighters union, is calling for additional in-vehicle repeaters to prevent communication issues during emergencies. The repeaters boost radio signals in areas like commercial buildings where signals can get lost. Currently, the city has one portable repeater and another on the way. (WFTS)

ShredFest 2023 is on the books — and no, it’s not a skateboarding event. Bring up to five file boxes of personal documents to 605 Evelyn Ave. on Saturday, Nov. 4, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. to have them securely shredded + recycled by the City of Lakeland’s Solid Waste Office.

Tickets go on sale this Friday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. for “Swan Lake,” hosted by the RP Funding Center for one night only as part of the World Ballet Series. Prices will range from $53-$104, and dancers will take the stage on April 3, 2024 at 7 p.m.

The University of Tampadonated a gas chromatograph to Polk State College’s Science Department. Students will get first-hand experience with the technology as soon as this spring. The $30,000-$50,000 machine separates substances (think: For uses in crime labs, quality control centers, etc.) without allowing them to decompose.

Early walk-in voting is available on weekdays from Monday, Oct. 23 to Friday, Nov. 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at these locations. Pro tip: Don’t forget to bring your photo ID.
