Tropical Storm Idalia is heading our way. Yesterday, President Biden approved an emergency declaration for the state of Florida. The number of Florida counties under a state of emergency increased from 33 to 46, including Polk.
The storm is expected to strengthen to a Category 3 or higher major hurricane before it makes landfall sometime tomorrow. Let’s talk preparation.
Stay informed
Sign up for Polk County’s emergency notifications on Alert Polk to get important weather updates during a hurricane watch (conditions possible within 48 hours) or a hurricane warning (conditions expected within 48 hours). You can also check the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center for updates.
For radio, tune into local radio stations WONN 1230 AM and WPCV 97.5.
Food + hurricane kits
The American Red Cross suggests having one gallon of water per person, per day, as well as non-perishables. Check out our hurricane kit must-haves.
Prepare your home
Lakeland Electric recommends taking precautionary measures like unplugging non-vital appliances, boarding windows, filling bathtubs for sanitary purposes, and locating your electrical panel and fuse box. Be prepared to shut off your gas, water, and electricity at the breaker box if you evacuate.
If you need to leave your house, stay with someone who has a safe space or relocate out of the area.
Polk County has 47 public shelters(see map above), three of which identify as special needs shelters and three of which accept certain pets. If you do head to a shelter, don’t forget to bring your medications, water, food, changes of clothes, and other essential items.
During emergencies, keep an eye on Polk Government Television to see which shelters become activated. Public shelters should be your last resort.

Stat
33%. That’s how much some taxes in the City of Bartow could increase according to recent tax notices. Daydreaming about Lakeland drive-thru windows
Picking up mobile orders at Black & Brew’s south side express drive-thru window is life changing. | Photo by @blackandbrew
With a rainy week ahead of us, we’re thinking about where you can get a quick bite handed to you through your car window.
Luckily for us, some of our favorite local spots have implemented drive-thru windows for easy pickup. Pro tip: Some windows are for mobile order pickup only (read: You can’t place an order at the window).
4 Rivers Smokehouse, 4729 S. Florida Ave. | Order at the window | Lakeland’s newest barbecue establishment located near Publix GreenWise Market gives customers dine-in and drive-thru options.
Black & Brew Southside, 4209 S. Florida Ave. | Mobile order | Order your favorite salad or sandwich online before heading to Black & Brew’s express drive-thru; orders cannot be placed at the window.
happyfastdelicious, 3601 S. Florida Ave. | Mobile order | Order custom drinks or menu items created by other Lakelanders in the app or at the walk-up window — try one of our custom drinks.
My go-to hurricane prep tip: Freeze water in Tupperware containers or resealable bags ahead of time. If you lose power, they can keep the contents of your fridge and freezer cool for a bit longer.
