New swan statues coming soon
Swansation: The story of Lakeland’s swan statues
There are all sorts of swans to be found on Lake Morton. | Photo by LALtoday
Last Friday, local artists Gillian Fazio and Meredith Pope shared freshly-painted Swansation statues, and it got us thinking about the original project back in 2002.
In case you forgot, the ~60 fiberglass swans arrived during Swansation, a public arts project fundraiser for Explorations V Children’s Museum, now Florida Children’s Museum. The statues were displayed downtown before being auctioned off and relocated around town in 2003.
Local artist Rick Olivo created a mold for the fiberglass swans. Then, businesses paid anywhere from $3,000-$20,000 per swan. Artists and students decorated each one in a unique style.
The birds bear a variety of styles, from bold designs to intricately painted scenes. Some designs have stayed the same over the past 20+ years and others have changed with the times. Lakeland High School students even had a hand in refurbishing two of the statues in 2019.
I made sure to stop by the Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market on Saturday to pick up my usual items — don’t forget that the market takes an annual hiatus in August, so stock up over the next three weekends.
