🏰 Meet Polk County’s historic castle
The Wonder House — Polk County’s historic castle

Nestled on two acres in Bartow is the Wonder House, a four-story, 20-room mansion built by Conrad Schuck and his nine children.
Conrad packed up his family and moved to Bartow in the 1920s. Despite working on it for 40 years, Conrad and his family never actually moved into their dream house. The first inhabitant was Lucy DuCharme — more on her later.
Building the Wonder House
Here are some fun facts regarding the mysterious + mystical house on Mann Road:
There were no blueprints for the house — it was completed using only Conrad’s imagination.
He was known for collecting unique trinkets and oddities for display — think snakes in jars, taxidermy, and a real coffin.
The kids used chisels and hammers at Conrad’s request despite newer tools being available.
Later owners
When Conrad grew too old to maintain it, Lucy DuCharme purchased the home in 1963. Adorned in full-length gowns, white gloves, and eccentric hats, she held parties for dignitaries, politicians, diplomats, and according to some, Elvis Presley.
Lucy hosted Christmas tours of the mansion up until her 1999 death. The house passed hands until it was purchased by Drew Davis + Krislin Kreis in 2015 for $162,750.
The Wonder House today
Drew and Krislin are still restoring the mansion to Conrad’s original vision. Like their fellow Wonder House inhabitants, they host tours. To get a look at the unique property, book one of these upcoming 1.5-hour tours:
