• Polk County Public Schools will soon welcome a new Winter Haven elementary school: South Pointe Elementary. The 127,000-sqft school is set to open to K-5 students this August for the 2023-2024 school year. Wondering if your student will attend? Check your zoned school.

• Charles B. Warren — author of “From Slavery to Community Builder: The Story of Lawrence B. Brown” — and other historians will speak at Florida Southern College’s Lawton Chiles Center for Florida History tonight at 6 p.m. Stop by to hear from the experts and purchase a copy of the book. • Register for Aveda and Venue Salon’s 2023 Walk for Water event to support Charity: Water, an organization that aims to bring clean water to people around the globe. The free walk kicks off from Lake Hollingsworth at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 23.

• You don’t have to travel to Tampa this weekend for a live performance; Union Hall has events all weekend long. While Lakeland Swifties are shaking it off in Tampa, you can go to open mic night, the Dixieland Night Market, or hear The Paperback Whale and other local bands.

• Meet local author Laycee Thigpen at Pressed Lakeland on Saturday, May 6 from 4-6 p.m. Laycee, an education consultant, poet, and researcher, will be signing copies of her book “Coaching for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Belonging in Early Childhood: A Step-by-Step Guide for Programs and Schools.”

• Lakeland’s Fresh Kitchen opens next week on Tuesday, April 18, but you can visit early for one of the restaurant’s friends and family days on Sunday, April 16-Monday, April 17. Bowls will be free — donations for the Children’s Home Society of Florida will be taken instead.

• Winter Haven’s Grove Roots Brewing invites you to its annual Sours + Flowers event on Sunday, April 16 from 12-5 p.m. Shop flowers and try fruited sours like strawberry, raspberry, guava, Jammy Sammy Blackberry, and more. Vendors, plants, and a sour strawberry slushee machine will be on site.
