The end of May means the beginning of summer (which officially starts on June 21 but who’s counting), so that means it’s time to break out the bug spray, grill, and sunscreen.

It’s also time to figure out what your next pool or beach read is, so we’ve compiled four recently released summer reads by authors with ties to Lakeland to get you started.

  • If You Stay” by Barbara Meyers | The second installment of the Lakeland author’s “Red Bud, Iowa” series about a young woman who turns her back on her family to make a new life for her daughter.
  • My Little Mockingbird” by Rebekah Firmin | A children’s book from local illustrator, Rebekah Firmin, about a baby mockingbird who is overwhelmed by noise.
  • Strawberry Pickles Vs. Bee-Bo the Robot” by Randy Richburg | An illustrated children’s book about bravery and kindness from a local author + artist. A perfect read for post-vacation storytime.
  • Ease Into Aging” by Dick Hartman | A guide from a Winter Haven local about preparing for the effects of aging + continued self improvement.
